I actually used to be really into rowing, in high school and in University.
I got seriously burned out of it in Uni though, and grew to really hate it. I dropped out of the program and never looked back. It’s a shame, really, because it was so fun in my earlier years and I had a fabulous time in the summers. They seemed so long, so hot and they lasted forever, in my mind.
This photo is from a summer we entered a lightweight coxed 4 at the Royal Canadian Henley regatta in St. Catharines. It was hilarious! For a time, rowing competed seriously with horseback riding for my attention- I didn’t go to as many horse shows because the regatta dates conflicted with them.
Horses always held my heart though, as if I knew rowing wouldn’t last. My desire for it sure didn’t.
I love this photo though, because to me it personifies how much fun we had each summer. It was always hot, beautiful and exciting. I sometimes miss that personal friendship we held within the team (sometimes some serious animosity too haha).
Things just aren’t as intense as they used to be.
